I remember when…

A piece of correspondence arrived recently from an old Bonker, Harry Russell recalling some of his old memories.

When I lived on The Bonk there were four fish and chip shops on the top end of the village. One was Denny’s in Wolverhampton Rd. another was Shirley’s on the High Street and a bit lower down was Hilda Hicken’s and the fourth being on Mount Pleasant opposite Thacker’s yard and was known as the ‘Pretty Womans’. Major Leslie Dutton

It is always pleasing to hear from old ‘Bonkers’ who like to keep in touch even though they have left village many years ago. One such person was Les – or ‘Mac’ – Dutton. He appears on most of Ernie Carter’s Boys Club football team photographs in the 1930s and over the last couple of years I have been able to put him in touch with many of his old contemporaries.
