Weekly News – 3 June 2012

There is a two day display of old photographs of Shareshill at their Village Hall on Monday and Tuesday 4th and 5th of June to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.
Our Salem Base will be open this Tuesday from 10am – 3pm as usual despite it being a Bank Holiday.
No local requests but a most interesting one from Alison who emails ‘I am currently researching the history of Heath Hayes with the aim of self-publishing a book. My maternal family moved to the village in the late nineteenth century and the project is a real labour of love.  I have already done a lot of the ground work and have started speaking to local residents. If anyone is interested in adding their memories and photographs I would love to hear from you.  The topics I am researching include  the growth and development of the village, the Coppice Colliery (Heath Hayes), shops and businesses, local churches, Five Ways Board School, sports and leisure, pubs and clubs plus World Wars I and II.’  Alison is more than happy to visit anyone for a chat and to show them her collection of photographs so please contact me initially via the email address below.
Vi immediately responded to Peter Shiel’s last week’s request on his Butler family with full details of the Butler family going back to the 1800s and their whereabouts, including his main request of where his grandfather and grandmother were buried – and they were buried together despite William living in Birmingham.  The details also tie up with the Lockett family.
And further to the updated information on Stuart’s Pearson family tree, Jean solves all the queries for him taking his family tree right back to 1778 linking him with marriages to the Pearson, Brockhouse. Lyon and Benton families.
And following on from the recent enquiry on the Paddock family we have now all the boxing records and family histories of them, including a family tree going back to 1793, as shown in our Archive Additions below.
New photographs handed in this week include the WMC Thursday League Bowling team in the 1970s, the wedding of George and Joan Perks, Sgt Thomas Wright and a caricature of all the Hawkins cricketers including George Gilbert, Frank Hemingsley, Duggie Barratt, Joe and Bill Cadman, Charlie Noad, Alan Bates, Horace Jervis, Charlie Collins, Joe Baldwin, Gordon Perry and Arthur Chilton.
And for our Archives, a beautifully framed action picture of Jack Martin of Aston Villa and England, and later Headmaster of Pinfold Lane School.  And a copy of the excellent book ‘Boxers of Essington’ by Jim Evans including brothers Tommy and Bill Paddock, and Joe Paddock as well as Stan Lemm with photographs and records which of course include other local fighters throughout the first half of the 20th century.
In Mike’s column of ‘What Happened this Week 50 Years Ago’ we cover the funeral of Meshach Bailey of 2 Park Street Cheslyn Hay and a resume of his life.  And Hawkins Colliery cricket team beating Dudley St Johns with mentions of Cooper, Hewitt, Perry and Collins.
Memories of Stanley Mason continue this week with stories of his schooldays that include names from the past, such as Corona Alexandria Victoria Brough, Lillian Brough, Mrs Edgar Fairfield, Joe Price, Mr Simkins, Don Wollaston, Ike Stokes, Mr Bale, Ernest Carter and Dickie Farrington.

  1. Dear sir,

I’m wondering if you may be able to help me. In the 3rd June 2012 Weekly News you have made reference to my great, great, great Uncles Tom and Bill Paddock. I am basing my current school project on these gentleman and I have obtained various bits of information from family members but I was wondering if you would have any further information that I may be able to use.

I would appreciate any help you can give me.

    Yours sincerely
