Events The theme for Roger’s Chat n Char this Thursday, 13th September is “On the Buses” Starting at 10am in the Salem as usual, and don’t forget our Annual Exhibition this year is on Saturday 6th October in the Village Hall, Pinfold Lane, Cheslyn Hay.

Our Salem Base is open this Tuesday 9am – 2pm.

What Happened This Week 50/100 years ago…by Mike Belcher 5th August 1968 Cannock Advertiser   Mr. Edward Walter Hackettreminiscing of the many change of Cheslyn Hay in his lifetime.

7th September 1918 Cannock Chase Courier A letter stating that Corporal Joseph Thomas Holland of the 184th Tunnelling Co. R.E. had fallen in action.
7th September 1918 Sympathy being extended to the wife and family of Corporal Joseph T. Holland, of Station Street, in their sad bereavement.
On Thursday evening a Garden Party was held in “The Park”, kindly lent by Mr. and Mrs. H. Hawkins, to extend a welcome to the newly appointed Minister – Rev. John Naylor, of Halifax.        At a meeting of the Local Relief Committee and Red Cross Society a report stated that no less than 19 requests were received from local lads at the front asking for requisites including shirts, socks, pants etc. Also another parcel had been dispatched to Sapper George Kingston, who was a Prisoner of War.
7th September 1918 Rose Annie Smith, of Cheslyn Hay was found guilty of charges under the Food Control Order.  Full details given.
John Davies, of Wyrley, was charged with stealing a packet of Cocoa, the property of Mr. G. Evans, of Cheslyn Hay and found guilty.

Describing his childhood around Hill Street, Wolverhampton Road, the Barn Flats, the Slings the Nook Colliery, Campions Wood and the Gosse as well as spending time in the Isolation Hospital in Hospital Lane.  Also mentioned are Alf Kingston’s farm, Martha Thomas‘s shop in Hatherton Street, Bill Jellyman,“Tompter” Pearson, Harold Sambrooks, Shirley’s fish and chip shop and Albert Potts, son of Mac Pottsthe Manchester United footballer.

General News the Funeral of John Minton will be held on Monday 1st October 2018 10am at the Salem Chapel Cheslyn Hay followed by Cremation at Stafford Crematorium.
